What is a Ledger hardware wallet?
A Ledger hardware wallet stores your private keys offline in a tamper-resistant secure element. Using your Ledger device together with Ledger Live gives you a secure way to manage crypto on desktop and mobile.
Ledger wallet Setup — Step by step
Begin at Ledger.com/start. The recommended flow is:
- Unbox your Ledger device and inspect packaging.
- Download the official Ledger Live App for your platform and install. (Windows / macOS / Linux / iOS / Android)
- Open Ledger Live & choose Get started. Select your device model and follow the on-screen setup.
- Initialize the device and securely write down the 24-word recovery phrase on a physical sheet — never store the phrase online.
- Install coin apps in Ledger Live's Manager, then add accounts and begin managing assets.
Tip: Keep the recovery phrase offline and never share it. If any app or website asks for it, it’s a scam.

Ledger Live — Download & Ledger Live Desktop
Ledger Live is the official companion app for Ledger devices. You use Ledger Live to manage accounts, install coin apps, send/receive tokens, and access in-app services. Ledger Live is available on desktop and mobile; always download from ledger.com.
Ledger Wallet Extension
The Ledger Extension is a browser extension that allows secure Web3 interactions while keeping private keys on your Ledger device. Use it when interacting with dApps that require a browser wallet; it works alongside Ledger Live for a secure flow.
Security & best practices
- Download only from ledger.com or Ledger.com/start. Fraudulent apps exist.
- Never enter your 24-word recovery phrase into a website or app.
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated via official channels.
- Use a pin and keep your recovery phrase stored offline, in a safe place.
Troubleshooting
If your device is not recognized, try a different USB cable or port, or consult the Ledger Support Center. If Ledger Live suggests unusual behavior or asks for sensitive info, stop and verify via ledger.com/support.
